What is a hotspot? A Wi-Fi hotspot is a device you can use to connect a Wi-Fi enabled device, such as a laptop, smartphone, or tablet, to the Internet. The hotspot is portable, so you can connect your device almost anywhere.
Where will the hotspot work? The internet service relies on cell tower technology and coverage. You can use the hotspot to connect to the internet wherever there is Verizon cell phone service.
How long can I borrow a hotspot? The loan period is 3 weeks (21 days) with no renewals.
Is there a charge to borrow a hotspot? No, there is no charge, and there are no overdue fines on hotspots. However, after the 3-week lending period ends, service to the device will be turned off. If the device is not returned, you will be charged a replacement fee. Replacement costs are:

Who can check out a hotspot? Anyone over age 18, with an Essex Public Library card in good standing, can borrow one. Only one hotspot may be checked out per library account.
Can I place a hold on a hotspot? Holds may be placed on hotspots. When a hotspot is available to fulfill the request, library staff will notify you by e-mail or phone. You will have 48 hours after the time of notification to check out the hotspot. After 48 hours, it will be released to another patron.
How do I return a hotspot I have checked out? It is okay to return the hotspots in the book drop. You may also call us when you arrive in the parking lot to return it, and we will retrieve it from the curbside service area.
Are there limits or filters on the hotspot? Hotspot data is not limited. Usage of the hotspot devices is filtered for data usage and for compliance with C.I.P.A.
