How it Works

Reading challenges, events, take-home crafts, and activities for a summer FULL of learning fun!

Track your reading and complete activities to earn badges and prizes in this summer’s challenge for all ages!  Use Beanstack to track online, or, if you want to go analog, pick up a paper log at the Library or download one below.

Virginia 529 Log


Children and teens who complete the challenge will receive
 ice cream from Better than a Great Day and be entered into the grand prize drawing for $500 towards a Virginia529 college savings account!  (See prize details in programs by age group.)

Adults who complete the challenge receive an Essex Public Library book light!

Little Ones (Babies, Toddlers, & Pre-K)

Read! Read for at least 30 days between June 1 and July 31.

Log! Log every day you read together. Track your reading online with Beanstack or use the paper reading log for little ones.

Earn Badges! Complete 5 fun activities that will help your little one get ready to read.

Prizes! Complete the challenge to receive a free book, ice cream from Better than a Great Day, and be entered in the grand prize drawing for $500 towards a Virginia529 college savings account! Log your reading on Beanstack to be included in our weekly drawings for a $25 gift certificate to Mums & Bubs.

(Rising Grades K-3)

(Rising Grades 4-7)

(Rising Grades 8-12)

Read! Log 10 hours of reading between June 1 and July 31.

Log! Track your reading online with Beanstack. The easiest way to track your reading hours is to use the Beanstack Tracker app available for Apple iOS and Android.

Earn Badges! Earn 5 activity badges to complete the challenge.

Prizes! Teen challenge completers will receive ice cream from Better than a Great Day, an animal slime squishee, and be entered into the grand prize drawing for $500 toward a Virginia529 college savings account.

Adults (18+)

Read! Log 10 hours of reading between June 1 and July 31. Looking for some reading recommendations? Check out our list of books for each habitat.

Log! Track your reading online with Beanstack. The easiest way to track your reading hours is to use the Beanstack Tracker app available for Apple iOS and Android. You can also download the paper reading log for adults

Prizes! When you complete the challenge, you’ll receive a handy book light so that you can keep reading – even past bedtime! To redeem your prize, let a staff member know that you’ve completed the challenge online or return your paper reading log to the library.

Earn Badges! Read books set in different habitats to earn badges. You must read 5 books to complete the challenge.

Special Events

We’ve partnered with the Rappahannock River Valley National Wildlife Refuge and Holiday Barn Pet Resorts to plan some PAW-SOME outdoor adventures. Check out our event guide to see all the exciting events happening this summer. Registration is required for all events this year, so head over to the event calendar to register. You can also join us on Facebook or the Library’s YouTube channel each Wednesday morning at 10:30 for Storytime at Home!
