2019 Summer Learning Program

Explore a Universe of Stories this Summer!

Get ready for an out-of-this-world adventure this summer at your public library! Our 2019 summer learning theme is “A Universe of Stories.” From June 19 through July 31, there will be weekly special events for all ages, including theatrical productions, an astrology workshop, a presentation from a NASA ambassador, a presentation from the Virginia Living Museum featuring live animals, and space-themed STEM and art workshops. Reading Challenges

Join our summer reading challenge to win prizes for reading and visiting your library. There’s a challenge designed for each member of your family.

Captain’s Log: Ages 8 and Under

If you accept this mission and successfully complete your official reading log, you will be entered into a grand prize drawing for a deluxe prize pack and receive refuel prizes along the way. Read 9 or more books and visit the library between July 10 and July 17 to refuel and get a prize! Complete your log by reading 18 books, and you’ll be entered into the grand prize drawing. Click here to view a PDF of the Captain’s Log, or visit us to pick one up. Submit your completed log to the library by July 31 to be entered into the grand prize drawing.

This year, there will be a “Read to the Moon” challenge for Tappahannock Elementary School students. If the TES Rockfish meet their goal to read 2,389 books this summer, there will be a special celebration for them at the beginning of the school year! They can turn their reading log in at the library or at the TES Back to School Night in August.

Mission Specialist’s Log: Ages 9-12

Cross out a blank circle each time you either spend 20 minutes reading or complete one of the activities listed below between June 19 and July 31. Need to refuel? Read at least 9 times, then visit the library between July 10 and July 17 to get a prize. Cross out all the circles to complete your challenge. Submit your completed log to the library by July 31 to get a prize and be entered into the drawing for the grand prize! Click here to view a PDF of the Mission Specialist’s Log, or visit us to pick one up.

Teen and Adult Reading Challenge

Why should kids have all the fun? Teens and adults have their own summer reading challenge! Pick up a summer reading challenge card at the library service desk to join the “A Universe of Stories” reading challenge. Check out books three separate times on three different days between June 19 and July 31. When you check out books, show your card to a library staff member and they’ll add a star punch to your card. Once you have checked out three times and your card has three punches, you’ll get a library tote bag and you’ll be entered into a grand prize drawing. Teens ages 13-18 are eligible for the teen prize basket drawing, and adults over 18 will have their own prize and drawing.
